Implementation of activities takes off

The implementation of activities at PSDR South partner universities is off to a successful start

The main activity to mark the beginning of the partnerships between Danish universities and Maseno University, Kenya, Tribhuvan University, Nepal, and Gulu University, Uganda, under the Building Stronger Universities in Developing Countries (BSU) initiative was an international conference, which was held at each South partner university.

Under the joint heading "Unpacking the Concepts of Stability, Democracy & Rigths: Theoretical Investigations", the conferences were organised and implemented at Maseno University, Tribhuvan Univsersity and Gulu University. The aim of the conferences was to establish a common understanding of the key academic concepts: Stability and Fragility; Gender Equality; and, Freeedom, Democracy and Rights.

The first of the conferences was held at Maseno University on 29-31 March 2012, with approximately 30 participants from Kenya, Uganda and Denmark. The conference was opened by Vice Chancellor, Professor Makawiti, Professor Frederick Wanyama, Chair of the Partnership Steering Committee - both Maseno University, and Professor Preben Kaarsholm, Vice Chair, Danish Platform Steering Committee.

On 11-14 April 2012, the International Seminar was held at Tribhuvan University with approximately 70 participants from Nepal and Denmark. Vice Chancellor, Professor Maharjan of Tribhuvan University gave the Welcome Address and Mr. Morten Jespersen, Danish Ambassador to Nepal gave the Symposium Address. Chief Guest, the Honorable Education Minister Deena Nath Sharma gave the Inaugural Speech.

Gulu University held the International Conference on 26-27 April 2012, with approximately 30 participants from Uganda, Kenya and Denmark. From Gulu University, Mr. Ambrose Okot, BSU Coordinator; Mr. Charles N. Okumu, Chair, Partnership Steering Commitee; and Vice Chancellor, Professor Nyeko Pen-Mogi welcomed the participants.
